The Benefits Of Art Therapy . Introduction. According To

The Benefits of Art Therapy Introduction According to Gale Encyclopedia of Alternative Medicine, art therapy, sometimes called expressive art or art psychology, encourages self-discovery and emotional growth. It is a two part process, involving both the creation of art and the discovery of its meaning. Rooted in Freud and Jung s theories of the subconscious and unconscious, art therapy is based on the assumption that visual symbols and images are the most accessible and natural form of communication to the human experience. Patients are encouraged to visualize, and then create, the thoughts and emotions that they cannot talk about. The resulting artwork is then reviewed and its meaning interpreted by the patient. The analysis of†¦show more content†¦Using this type of therapy for the mentally ill patients can potentially reduce the stigma. Because of this therapy form, sometimes people are less likely to need drugs or such a high dose. Without medication, people might be more inclined to accept the fact that they have a mental illness and seek treatment. According to Helen Dawson, Our nation seems like it’s always in the grips of a stress epidemic. Stress and anxiety are disorders that affect more people than ever before, with research suggesting that work related stress costs the American economy $300 billion each year as a result of related health care costs and missed days at work. According to 76% of those individuals suffering from stress, money and work are the leading causes of the condition. Workplace stress can have a myriad of adverse effects. It can lead to physical and psychological systems (with one in ten strokes being attributed to stress) and, at its worse, workplace stress can even result in alcohol or substance abuse in a bid to drown out the tension of the experience. However art therapy can be massively beneficial in helping to deal with workplace stress and process the emotions involved. Intensively focusing on any activity (be that creating art, concentrating on a hobby, or even reading a book) can help to temporarily relieve stress by distracting and refocusing the mind at least for a while. However, dealing with stress more permanently requires more creative solutions.Show MoreRelatedInformative Speech About Art Therapy809 Words   |  4 Pages Introduction ATTENTION STRATEGY: I tell the audience of my experience trying to choose a career and start with pointing out the obvious struggle of finding the right career for them and everyone else. George Orwell Essay Example For Students

George Orwell Essay George Orwell published 1984 in 1949, the same year that the Soviet Union exploded its first atomic bomb. The arms race that followed the Soviets development of nuclear weaponry quickly escalated into the Cold War, which raged for the next four decades as the enormous ideological gulf separating capitalism and democracy from totalitarianism and Communism led to mutual hatred between the United States and the Soviet Union, the worlds most powerful nations. During the long decades of the Cold War, perhaps no book better captured the moral objections against totalitarian Communism than 1984, written by Orwell originally to warn the world of the dangers of authoritarian regimes. Depicting a horrifying near-future of governmental oppression, slavery, and alienation, 1984 created a sensation upon its initial appearance, sounding the alarm that the atrocities committed under Communism upon human material security and freedom were possible not only in Russia and Eastern Europe, but in the We st as well. Many of the methods that the Party in 1984 uses to sustain its absolute power, such as the rewriting of history and the use of political icons, were actually employed in Communist nations around the world (Big Brother is similar to Lenin in the Soviet Union and Mao in China). A recent historical survey conducted by a group of French scholars, published in America as The Black Book of Communism in 1999, estimates that Communist governments were directly responsible for the deaths of more than 100 million people during the twentieth century, more than died during World War I, World War II, or during any of the horrific genocide campaigns of the twentieth century. Though the world did not fall under authoritarian control as Orwell feared it might, 1984 has not become dated; it remains an invaluable book, both warning against a world that could come into existence and reminding the reader of one that did. Just as it did in 1949, 1984 continues to bear enough relevance and prescience to make such the world it prophesies seem frighteningly possible. In the novel, for instance, war is used as a device for political manipulation on televisiona concept presented strikingly in the film Wag the Dog. Also in the novel, historical records are rewritten to match the political ideology of the Partya technique that the Soviet Union used as recently as a decade ago, and one still common in some parts of the world. Though 1984 has passed, the warning of Orwells novel remains important: the Cold War may be over, but the world has never completely escaped from the dystopian dangers that Orwell describes.
